Omaha World-Herald from Omaha, Nebraska (2024)

to West J. and MONDAY, APRIL 11, 2005 MIDLANDS OMAHA WORLD- HERALD Carl Rohde was known for his integrity BY MELINDA KEENAN WORLD-HERALDSTAFFWRITER It was the adoption of the Rural Electrification Act of 1936 that gave Carl "George" Rohde an entrepreneurial opportunity that led to a lifelong career. Rohde started in the electrical business in the late 1930s, working to bring light to homes and businesses throughout Nebraska and surrounding states. For 60 years, he was in the electrical supply and distribution business, providing every kind of wire or generator or motor to thousands of power companies and contractors. In 1990, Rohde retired as president of Electric Fixture and Supply.

"He had the most integrity of anybody I ever met," said his son, Bruce Rohde, who is chairman and chief executive officer of ConAgra Inc. "He wouldn't color a fact or shade a fact the highest integrity, a a a a a a a hardworking guy." He retired as president of Electric Fixture and Supply after a long career in the electrical supply and distribution business. Rohde, 89, died Saturday. Services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St.

Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. Rohde was born in 1916 in Columbus, Neb. His father was a school superintendent, so the family moved around the state from one school district to another, the younger Rohde said. Carl Rohde graduated from Columbus High School during the Great Depression. The federal effort to bring electricity to rural communities led to a job.

He worked for the former Schneider Electric from 1937 to 1957. Then he joined Electrical Fixture, becoming a principal owner and president. He was involved in a number of professional groups in his industry, including serving as president of the National Association of Electrical Dealers. Rohde married in 1937, and he and his wife, Betty, had two children, Bruce of Omaha and Mary Lynn Wright of Kansas City, Mo. Betty Rohde died 14 months ago, just shy of her 89th birthday.

During retirement, Rohde loved playing golf and spending time at their second home in Arizona. But in his final months, Rohde was spending each day writing small checks to charities, the younger Rohde said. "He paid attention to current events and a number of charitable activities," he said. Besides his two children, Rohde is survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Greg Carter, 50, enjoyed yardwork, fishing BY KRISTIN ZAGURSKI WORLD-HERALD STAFFWRITER Greg Carter's father was in the Air Force, so he moved around a lot growing up.

After graduating from high school in Virginia, Carter himself joined the Air Force, but he stayed in only about a year, said his sister, Sherry Stroede. He moved to Omaha in the early 1970s. Carter was driving his son, Vincent, 13, to school Friday when he struck a semitrailer truck as he merged onto the North Freeway from the Dodge Street ramp. He lost control, and his SUV rolled down an embankment. CARTER -Greg P.
