Leader-Telegram from Eau Claire, Wisconsin (2024)

The goal is to have the house available from November to March and accommodate eight to 10 people. The basem*nt of the home also could be divided and create apartments for two households from April to October. That area would be operated much like the current Stepping Stones shelter, 1920 S. Broadway, which has three apartments where people can stay up to a month. The issue is the city does not have zoning to allow for a homeless shelter.

The council will discuss options what could be done if it is decided to allow a shelter there. Council members also will discuss in the future possible financial support for Evergreen Cemetery. Ron Fry, Evergreen Cemetery Association president, sent a letter to City Administrator Lowell Prange on the issue. In his letter Fry said the association has about $35,000 in savings and should allow the continued operation of the cemetery through the summer and into the fall. He pointed out income is down considerably the last three years with the increase in cremation burials and families choosing not to use traditional cemetery burials.

The association has operated in a deficit for 10 years, Fry noted. Evergreen Cemetery has operated as a private, non-church affiliated cemetery since 1874. It does not have a church budget to support the operation or volunteer help. The cemetery is 24 acres with 10 acres to mow and over 6,000 burials. It is possible the city crews could help with mowing when there is time, Fry noted in his letter.

The association also is seeking financial assistance to support a sexton responsible for business matters such as lot sales, layouts, excavations, record keeping, historical oversight, and other tasks, Fry noted. Evergreen Cemetery was founded by the Knapp, Stout Co. lumbering business and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
