The people in my life who know me best would tell you I can be pretty stubborn. I view rules as mere suggestions. Where am I going with all this? I just made Chocolate Peanut Butter Hummus!

I know what you’re thinking. “Is dessert hummus any good?” No. It’s freaking great! You will never look at hummus the same way ever again. Guaranteed!

Are you ready? Let’s make it!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Dessert Hummus | Shane & Simple (2)

Hummus is one of my favorite foods. I use it as a condiment on sandwiches, eat it with veggies and pita, and even make salad dressings with it sometimes. But, one thing I had never done is thought of hummus as dessert.

After hearing of the idea I decided to take two of my guilty pleasures, chocolate, and peanut butter, and see what might happen. O…M…G! And, the best part? It’s stupid simple! A little peanut butter, cocoa powder, maple syrup, a little vanilla and you’ve got something incredibly delicious.

As crazy as it might sound.

Ingredients You’ll Need

You are going to be amazed at the taste of this recipe. You’ll find it hard to believe that chickpeas are in this wonderful spread. It’s like a peanut butter cup was turned into hummus. For realzzzzz.

Here is everything you’ll need:

  • 1 15-ounce can low-sodium or no salt added chickpeas
  • ¼ cup creamy natural peanut butter
  • ¼ cupmaple syrup
  • ¼ cupcocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Non-dairy chocolate chips for topping (optional)

Pro Tip: Use a food processor. It works best. You can use a high speed blender but you will possibly have to add more water. And, it might create a less thicker texture.

You, sir, are a super genius. I am in absolute shock. This is rich, decadent and chocolatey. (I omitted the peanut butter). I thinned it with a splash of coconut milk. Chick peas are absolutely NOT obvious.
If there were more stars I would absolutely award them too.

Hi, Alex. You could leave it out, but the only alternates I know would be monk fruit or dates.

I made this over a year ago for a family dinner and it was a winner!!! We served it with strawberries, bananas, apples and pretzel sticks. Amazing!!!
Now I want to make it for a birthday with people having nut allergies so I was wondering if you had any suggestions?
    Thank you!

I haven’t tried it in this recipe, so not sure if they flavor would work out well, but maybe sunflower butter instead of peanut butter? It’s also really delicious. You can buy it at most groceries. Or make your own easy enough. Get raw sunflower seeds. Best to toast them on a pan. Constantly stir, don’t let them burn. Then food process until really creamy. can take a while. I find that if you put the toasted seeds in the freezer they process much faster into that real nice creamy state.

    Hello there,
I’m a new follower , and I just have to say I’m loving the look of the recipes you have … but this chocolate hummus …. Hole. E. Cow. lol This is absolutely delicious.
I used black cocoa powder so it was incredibly dark … I NEVER would have thought to use chickpeas in any type of dessert , and I am thrilled to have come across this recipe. I used apples for dipping/scooping .. but look forward to trying other things as well. Total game changer for someone who needs a sweet and wants to do it in a healthy way. Thanks so much for this recipe! 🙂

OMG! Shane, this is amazing! I would give this recipe 10 stars if I could! I made it with almond butter (b/c of peanut butter allergies), and omitted the choc chips because I was out. Dipped apple slices in it. What a terrific and healthy treat. Will definitely make chocolate hummus again…and again…and again! Thank you!

It’s funny that I came across this recipe this week because just last week I had purchased an overpriced and probably too sugar-laden chocolate hummus from the grocery store which my family loved. I just whipped up your version and we will have it tonight. I made “regular” hummus and I too don’t know why I didn’t think to try adding chocolate myself. Thanks for the recipe.

This is absolutely delicious! I keep some in my fridge all the time. I love it on apples for an afternoon snack. I also just eat a spoonful when I have a craving for something chocolate. This is one of the best WFPB recipes I have ever tried—and the easiest! Thanks Shane.

Since it’s just me, (hubby doesn’t like hummus) I had some single-serve organic hummus cups from Costco. They’re a little over 2 oz in size. Used 1T cocoa powder, 1T maple syrup, 1T peanut butter powder, 1/4 tsp vanilla bean paste, and added enough water to desired consistency. DELICIOUS … and just the perfect amount for one person!

This recipe was a keeper from the very first batch–and I’ve made dozens of batches since that one. If there is almond butter in the house, I use that instead of peanut butter and it becomes even more elegant. This is so easy to put together and is perfect either as a dessert or for taming post-workout hunger. Many thanks for this one, Shane
